I think this weeks article was the most interesting so far. Like we discussed in last weeks review technology is growing at such a fast rate. I really appreciated the term "technology natives" that this article used because it is so fitting. The younger generation has always had technology available and so their experience and relationship with it is completely different. I have young siblings and cousins that have had a Facebook account since they were in fourth/fifth grade and they don't understand the danger that can go along with it.
One of the most bothersome things to me that was mentioned in the article was cyber bullying. One of my friends in middle school was always bullied but when everyone started to get Facebook it got so much worse. Because of the disinhibition the Internet provides my fellow classmates became even more brutal towards her. She eventually had to transfer schools and create a new account and blocked all the bullies so they would leave her alone. My classmates did not realize that even though they weren't saying things to her face it was still just and hurtful.
I hope to stress the importance of not bullying and the serious consequences that go along with it, both bullying in person and over the Internet. But this is not an easy task and with technology evolving even more students Cyber Bullying could become more extreme.

ReplyDeleteI can't believe that little kids in elementary school have Facebook accounts. It is almost sad to me because I would never want them to fall victim of the dangers of having their information online. Some things that are included in Facebook profiles is very private and some children don't know the boundaries they should take when posting things. I'm really sorry to hear that your friend dealt first hand with cyber bullying. It is such a passive way to confront someone and I would never wish that upon any. I like that points you focused on and how you related it to a personal story. It makes your writing that much more powerful. Great Job Talicia!

I also enjoyed the term "technology natives" to describe how our generation and generations to come are so accustomed to technology. It has become such a large part of our everyday lives. Right now, we are communicating with each other without even seeing each other or opening our mouths because of technology. That shows how easy it is also, that someone can portray themselves as someone they are not to be a "friend" but in fact be very dangerous to kids via social networking. Like you and the author mention, technology and especially the internet can be very dangerous to our society if they are not handled properly so we need to teach students how to filter through things they come across on the internet.
ReplyDeleteKatelynn- I completely agree about how scary it is that young children have Facebook accounts. There is a lot of personal information that can be seen by strangers and used wrongly. It is even more dangerous if the child is not taught what information to keep private and who to trust on the Internet.
ReplyDeleteJayna- that is a great point about how the technology allows us to portray ourselves as other people and the dangers that can cause with young children that are too trusting on the Internet and social media sites.
I completely agree with you!! Cyber bullying is scary and a very intense battle to fight. I know of someone who actually took their life over what was said over the internet. Granted they had battles physically, but what was said over the internet was the final straw that led to him taking his life. The thing that hurts the most is that 90% of it was preventable. This is why I feel that it's SO important for teachers to develop a sense of community within their classrooms. Just like parents, teachers are more than just teachers. I have favorite teachers that were good friends and counselors when I needed them the most. They cared about me in a professional manner and I'm forever grateful for them.
